Trail to Minden and Gardnerville

Our goal is to extend the V&T multi-use trail south from Carson City to Minden and Gardnerville. Once path users leave Carson City, they will follow Heybourne Road south along Sunridge Golf Course. There is a former V&T railroad crossing over the Carson River that we hope to use as the location of a pedestrian and bike bridge. The trail will be paved and unpaved.

Douglas County commissioners approved a trail plan in January 2024 that includes the trail linking Gardnerville with the Carson City. The biggest challenge is building a bridge across the Carson River.

A few abutments from the former railroad bridge are still visible. The former V&T railroad bridge over the Carson River must be replaced with a pedestrian and bike friendly bridge. We are seeking route approvals and easements for this segment so we can widen and pave it.

Historic V&T Trails is seeking funding from a Conserve Nevada Grant to pay for a feasibility plan. That section of trail will connect to the 43 miles already completed from south Carson City to City Plaza in Reno.

This proposed section originates from Hwy 395 in Minden and passes through a narrow strip of land owned by the Wheeler Conservation Ranch, new owners of the 1,120-acre Kirman Field formerly owned by Bently family. We will need to secure an easement from Wheeler Conservation Ranch this part of the trail. The former railroad right of way passes over the Carson River and follows alongside Heybourne Rd.
